We imagined that the year was 2289 and we found a building that was built in 2023 without knowing why or what for. The only thing we knew was that in 2100 the sea water rose so high that it flooded it, we know that in 2227 the water receded, however, life remained there. When we arrived, we opened paths, generated stairs and opened possibilities to meet a world that had taken over this space, a world that normally we cannot see, that remains hidden to most of us.
This building has two fundamental objectives: first, to convey to those who enter it, that we, as human beings, are just another part of the natural world, and that the idea that we can control it is what is expelling us from it; and second, to make explicit the ways in which architecture can become a platform to integrate us back into our own ecosystem, so that, as a species, we can remain on this planet.
The Sea of Cortez Research Center was born from the understanding that human beings do not control nature, but that we are part of it and as such we must find a way to relate symbiotically with our environment. The project, conceived as a ruin (past or future) that was invaded by nature and has left in its wake a window to a hidden world, functions as an educational and research center for one of the richest and most diverse ecosystems in the world: the Sea of Cortez.
The Center is part of the regeneration program for Mazatlan’s Central Park complex. The intention is to complement the public, natural and cultural program of this area of great social interest. It offers an educational experience of the marine and coastal ecosystems of the Sea of Cortez, through spaces dedicated to didactic programs, permanent and temporary exhibitions, laboratories, auditoriums, public plazas, administrative areas, and conservation areas for endemic species.
The Sea of Cortez Research Center aims to increase the interaction between interior and exterior space, introduce a dynamic in the urban landscape that blurs the dichotomy between public and private space in the city, and allows nature to regain its place in our ‘human world’.
