石元泰博的摄影作品第一次进入纽约现代艺术博物馆(MoMA),是在Edward Steichen策划的 “Always the Young Strangers” 展览上,那场展览展出了25位美国年轻摄影师的作品。后经由MoMA委托拍摄,1953年石元泰博返回日本,第一次参访了桂离宫。在那之后的30年间,石元泰博几次参访桂离宫,拍下不同系列的作品。1974年,等他第二次出现在MoMA的展览上时,已经恢复日本身份,作为日本现代摄影进程中非常重要的一员参展“New Japanese Photography”,展览展出了10张他所拍摄的桂离宫黑白影像。
