This project is the reconstruction of the iconic Kamal Theater in Kazan, Russia. Kengo Kuma & Associates participated as design supervisor, collaborating with the local architectural firm Wowhaus, who led the design effort.
Inspired by the image of a “frozen flower” blooming on the surface of Lake Kaban, the building’s façade is composed of triangular aluminium-framed panels filled with custom laminated glass.
These shards of “ice” vary in angle and size, catching the light differently depending on the weather, season, and time of day.
From across the lake, the structure appears as a shimmering sculpture—both monumental and delicate.
In contrast, the interior is formed with warm materials and gentle curves, creating a welcoming, soft atmosphere. The decorative design of the theater’s interiors is inspired by an ancient legend about the treasures of Lake Kaban. This imagery aligns with the overall architectural concept of the theater, featuring an “icy” roof, undulating ceilings, and wall volumes reminiscent of vessels where treasures were believed to be kept.
The design integrates numerous traditional patterns and techniques developed in collaboration with local Tatar artists and craftsmen, embedding the cultural memory of the region into the spatial experience.
The project includes 16 petal-like walls up to 11.4 meters high. Each petal marks the entrance to one of the performance halls and conveys its character. Different shades of metal, finishes resembling “silver” and “gold”, as well as shimmering effects and layered textures, give the walls a light and intricate appearance. The illumination of the petals changes depending on the time of day and the program of events.
The theater will become an urban public space and will be open to visitors all day. The four performance halls can accommodate more than 1,300 spectators. All halls are multifunctional and designed for different event formats.
The architecture aims to serve as a vessel that embraces the region’s history and spirit through the contrast between a cold, delicate skin and a warm, richly layered interior.
