The National Taiwan University Cancer Center (NTU Cancer Center) was made possible through a major donation from Terry Gou, founder of Hon Hai Precision Industry, and the YongLin Healthcare Foundation. Designed by JJP Architects & Planners and completed after a decade-long process, the hospital opened in 2019 and has since become an internationally recognized leader in cancer care.
Guided by architect Joshua Pan’s belief in the integration of humanity and nature, the design uses light and landscape as fundamental spatial tools. Embedded throughout the processes of cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, these elements reshape the hospital experience, replacing clinical detachment with an atmosphere of calm and restoration. In this context, architecture moves beyond a passive backdrop to actively support healing.

Part 1
Rising from the Urban Fabric
Located on the eastern edge of the National Taiwan University campus, the site connects the Radiation Science and Proton Therapy Center with the Biomedical Engineering Building, together forming the campus’s Biomedical Research Axis. This alignment supports a new model of industry–academia collaboration and encourages cross-disciplinary research exchange.

"A hospital should not seek attention, but offer care in silence."
— Joshua Pan, FAIA, Founder of JJP
The design employs a recessed, curved facade to create an open and neighborly first impression. Gradually rising building masses are integrated into the campus context, extending NTU’s architectural texture while forming a unified yet distinctive identity.

The staggered configuration maximizes daylight and views for all patient rooms. Unwanted surroundings are subtly screened, while carefully framed views—most notably toward Taipei 101 skyline—connect patients to the larger urban and cultural landscape, reinforcing a sense of orientation and continuity beyond the hospital.

Part 2
Healing Through the Power of Nature
Beyond the efficient integration of outpatient, inpatient, diagnostic, administrative, and conference functions, the project harnesses natural forces to extend the experience of the outdoors into interior spaces. Through fluid spatial orchestration, the hospital achieves a profound healing effect for both body and spirit.

Cuiwei Living Street — The Arcade of Healing,Light filtering through gaps, flowing like a spatial canyon
At the central corridor connecting the hospital entrance with the east and west wings, JJP introduces a three-story-high, open passage that guides daylight through structural gaps. Here, the poetic imagery of “Cuiwei,” drawn from classical Chinese literature, is translated into a contemporary spatial sequence. Operating as the Arcade of Healing, the space organizes movement, light, and pause within the hospital’s daily circulation.

"At dusk I descend from the green hills, The mountain moon accompanies my return. Looking back at the path I came, A vast, misty verdure( Cuiwei ) fills the horizon."
— Li Bai, "Down Zhongnan Mountain"
Light brushes past the suspended green butterfly installations and interacts with textured walls and layered vegetation, shaping a spatial experience reminiscent of Taiwan’s mountain canyons. Timber and stone are stacked along opposing walls, forming stratified surfaces that recall natural rock formations. Transparent openings at both ends allow greenery to circulate through the corridor, creating a continuous spatial rhythm.

The Atrium of Hope –Skylight pouring down, illuminating all
Located at the very heart of the hospital, the Atrium of Hope is crowned by a skylight that allows daylight to cascade downward. Passing through steel structures patterned like leaf veins, the light gathers into a clear, luminous column—making hope itself a tangible presence.

Emptiness and restraint define the spatial character of the Atrium of Hope. Warm brown wood-grain walls, white and gray marble flooring, and a subdued ceiling enclosure form a quiet circular space. Diffused daylight fills the interior, creating an appropriate setting for small-scale musical performances. Perforated glass filters direct sunlight into soft, even illumination, bringing visual and physical comfort to the space.

Healing Landscapes – An integration of horticulture, aromatherapy, and public art
Surrounding the building, a network of therapeutic gardens integrates horticulture, fragrance, and public art into a multi-sensory healing environment.

Public art installations dispersed across the lawn interact with plant fragrances, subtly structuring the outdoor spaces into an immersive landscape. These outdoor spaces invite movement, pause, and reflection, allowing

Part 3
Leading Change: Innovation in Design Thinking and Methodology
Developed over a ten-year process, the project introduced a series of experimental design methods rarely seen in Taiwan’s healthcare architecture at the time. From full-scale room simulations to on-site 1:1 mockup verification during construction, these approaches established a new benchmark for rigorous implementation within the medical building sector.

3.1 Mockup
Mockup Simulation – Taiwan’s first on-site 1:1 medical prototype
In 2009, JJP constructed seven types of medical space mockups at full scale, including intensive care units, single and double inpatient rooms, chemotherapy areas, and nursing stations. Through scenario-based simulation, architects, medical staff, and operational teams were able to engage in concrete and efficient discussions, allowing diverse requirements to be integrated early in the design process.

In 2011, an approximately 6,612 m² full-scale simulation space was built directly on site—the first 1:1 on-site mock-up in Taiwan’s medical field. It resolved technical and procedural disputes while also serving as a real-world emergency disaster training facility for the cancer care team, achieving dual benefits in a single initiative.

Leaf-Vein Nursing Layout – Every 30 meters saved equals one minute gained
The inpatient wards adopt a leaf-inspired layout that significantly shortens nursing routes, improving efficiency and care quality. Patient rooms, including those in intensive care, are provided with windows that reconnect occupants to natural light and daily rhythms, supporting both physical recovery and psychological well-being.

All intensive care units are equipped with windows, allowing both patients and staff to perceive the passage of day and night. This connection to natural rhythms provides psychological calm during critical treatment periods. Sunrooms, healing gardens, and consultation rooms are also incorporated to offer essential physical and emotional support.

Patient Resource Center - Placing “care” at the heart of the hospital
Unusually large in scale, the Patient Resource Center occupies a prime ground-floor location with generous natural light. Through careful gradation of privacy—from open to intimate—the design gently encourages patients to lower their guard and engage voluntarily in a wide range of activities.

Part 4
Sustainability and Seismic Resilience as Enduring Commitments
Guided by long-term sustainability principles, the inpatient building adopts a durable, fully recyclable steel structural system, with a specific focus on low-carbon recycled steel. Compared to conventional steel production, this material reduces energy consumption by approximately 75% and carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 60%, while fully meeting stringent seismic performance requirements. Overall, the use of recycled steel in this project is estimated to have reduced carbon emissions by approximately 43,000 tons.

Through architecture, the NTU Cancer Center completes a sustained inquiry into the nature of healing space—from the low-carbon commitment of recycled steel, to the rigor of full-scale prototyping, and to patient rooms framed by daylight and healing gardens that support everyday recovery. Together, these elements reflect JJP’s consistent belief: genuine healing ultimately takes place where light and hope are allowed to settle.
