The project is situated within an old residential compound in Xuhui District, Shanghai, near Shanghai South Railway Station. This compound exemplifies Shanghai's typical "old, dilapidated, and cramped" housing. Unlike many old neighborhoods that maintain connections with surrounding public spaces, this one is physically severed by railways, a waterway, and urban roads, preventing any expansion of public space outward. Therefore, all public space must be created internally. The project site is the only available vacant land within the compound that can be transformed. The architect’s involvement began with a public welfare initiative and continued throughout the entire design and construction supervision process, consistently guided by the principle of public service.

The initial proposal for the renovation was a playground themed around "child-friendliness." However, on-site investigation revealed an equally pressing lack of public spaces for the elderly within the community. Squeezed by vehicle lanes and parking spaces, the elderly have had to rely on the shelter of a few trees and old chairs brought from their homes, creating a kind of "self-initiated public space." This observation inspired us to integrate the needs of both the elderly and children into the spatial planning. While seniors enjoy their own dedicated rest areas as caregivers, children are free to indulge their innate sense of exploration.

Within the site stand two large cedar trees, growing staggered along an east-west axis. These cedars are in a sub-healthy state and have periodically faced threats of being cut down or removed. The redesigned public space aims to foster a renewed connection between residents and the trees, emphasizing their value and protection. These cedars likely grew alongside the community, perhaps even predating it. The original form of such a community unit might have been a village, where collective activities often revolved around an ancient tree or an old well—a gathering place and the spiritual heart of the settlement. Through these two cedars, which have grown with the neighborhood, we seek to rekindle the communal spirit and public essence of the community. Just as in the poorest villages of the past, the ancestral hall or the old well were always kept clean and respected, these trees can serve as a living symbol of care and collective identity.

The site, while maximizing the preservation of existing greenery, encompasses a planned area of approximately 310 m². The design unfolds around the two large trees, utilizing the staggered space between them to support a long elevated walkway. This bridge serves both as a passage leading to the slide and as an interactive space for engaging with the trees and nature. Beneath the hanging roof structure suspended from the bridge, an activity area for the elderly is created.

The roof surface is designed to be within reach of plants and touchable by people, embodying the quality of traditional Chinese architecture—where the relationship with nature and humans is intimate and immediate. The roof contour turns away from the vehicle lane, unfolds toward the north, and then gently slopes downward, guiding the viewer’s gaze toward the greenery on both sides and directly ahead. Within the same space, it conveys both a sense of seclusion and expansiveness.

The black slanted columns beneath the roof not only make the structure perceptible but also enhance the spatial tension. The column foundations simultaneously serve as the base for benches under the roof, achieving an integration of architecture and furniture—where furniture becomes part of the building. Each side of the bench cantilevers 2.5 meters, forming a relationship of structural homology with the floating roof. Tiered seating for community events is arranged along both sides of the roof, while standalone stools made from surplus steel are placed beneath the trees.

Despite the project's limited funding and constrained construction budget, the architects firmly believe that thorough drawing preparation and sufficient on-site communication can still lead to high-quality, tangible outcomes.Structurally, we maintained continuous communication and collaboration with the structural engineer to achieve a lightweight architectural effect where structure and architecture are integrated. With a total projected area of 72 m², the ground footprint is only 1.86 m², significantly freeing up ground-level activity space within the limited site.

In terms of materials, we used readily available steel products such as I-beams, T-beams, and rebar. Tension cables were too expensive, so we only used two in areas accessible to people, replacing the rest with rebar. For touchable surfaces like the roof and railings, we chose finely textured aluminum panels. The wood used for outdoor seating was carefully selected reclaimed ironwood (teak).

In terms of construction detailing, we adopted meticulous design strategies that allowed on-site workers to complete the assembly using basic techniques such as cutting and welding—transforming ordinary materials into something extraordinary. For example, handrails welded from standard pipes, tailored for children’s use, create a dynamic, aircraft-like effect at the corners.

And aren' t these expressions precisely the living wisdom of residents in old urban neighborhoods? We hope the design stays true to life, touches the earth through its structure, and cultivates the public spirit of the community.
