Estudio Carme Pinós
The project started with the goal of creating a building where all the users could enjoy well-ventilated offices with plenty of light, and in which, given the good climate of the city of Guadalajara, air conditioning wouldn’t be necessary.
We were asked to design a unique building with a limited area, but clear height. We chose to grow in height.
The design team took the form of a 70-meter-high tower with a clover-shaped floor plan, with the offices sharing space on each one of the three ‘leaves’. The four-story underground parking lot takes up an overall 10,000 m2, so the remaining 7,000 are for the sixteen heights of the tower.
The vertical circulations, also organized in three columns, are arranged between the three ‘leaves’. Three concrete cores, made from curved walls of white concrete measuring from 15 to 30 centimeters thick, containing all the vertical installations and circulations, are the columns that constitute the only supporting structure of the building.
Three floors of the building are suppressed alternately to let light enter from the sides into this central space, while the resulting voids become large windows for the offices that open up to this exterior space and let air circulate from side to side.
On the lower level, this space acts as a slightly elevated entry atrium, and one reaches it through a monumental staircase; in the upper part, the courtyard is blurred gradually as the three modules of offices, at different heights, disappear.
A wood latticework, separated from the facade by maintenance corridors, protects us from the sun and lets air circulate vertically, preventing the glass facades from overheating.
