At the time NAVER was founded, there was no Korean search engine, and foreign search engines were the only option. NAVER was established on the belief that a domestic search engine was necessary to protect information competitiveness.
For the last 20 years, in the face of big IT companies dominating the global market, NAVER has focused on protecting internet diversity. Though it not may be an issue of whether it is ‘good or bad’ to use a particular search engine, we must be cautious of everybody using the same engine. Other countries only have the choice of Google, but in Korea, we could access search results that are not shown on Google using a domestic search engine, and I believe this expands our options and scope of thinking. NAVER believes this is the 21st-century diversity, and a way to protect culture and politics.
NAVER hopes to play a role in preserving our data and passing it on to the next generation using the data center. If a particular language is difficult to use in a search, it cannot be utilized, and that language will diminish. NAVER believes that a good search engine must exist to protect the Korean letter (Hangul), so that information competitiveness of people who use native language is not undermined. In order to preserve one’s own opinions and cultural-political diversity, the domestic search engine made by locals, along with a global search engine, must exist. NAVER, an original search engine, will be placed at the new data center.
The new data center will protect what is ours, and at the same time serve as a new opportunity and milestone for the 21st-century industry. In today's fiercely competitive world, there must be an environment where companies can quickly respond to new trends and focus on research and development. I believe that Korean companies have the strongest desire to succeed in the global market. US company online services have mostly been used by European users, and European users have recently begun to recognize the issue of US companies dominating their data and sales. In this regard, internet users around the world are increasingly considering NAVER as a new alternative service.
The NAVER data center will serve as a database for Koreans and people around the world, and as the cornerstone of people’s daily lives.
