Nanping City is located on the southern slope of the Wuyi Mountains and boasts exceptional ecological and natural conditions. It is the only city in China that combines dual World Heritage status and a National Park designation. As a key part of the Wuyi Mountain scenic loop, Aotou Village is nestled within clouded valleys and mountainous landscapes, making it a natural oxygen bar at an elevation of over a thousand meters. The unique character of the site defines its settlement spaces, with the village layout harmonizing with the surrounding terrain, almost as an extension of nature itself, while also aligning with the development needs of a future homestay village.

The landscape of Aotou Village comprises four environmental elements: the village, valleys, forests, and tea fields. Centered along the valley line, an integrated public space system connects these landscapes with new pathways, creating a gathering place for both villagers and visitors.
Stone serves as the primary material for constructing this natural waypoint, suggesting an intrinsic connection between human intervention and nature. Building a platform at the village entrance, integrating valley observation, community activities, and congregation spaces will be key to uncovering its local value.
Stacked Stones carry symbolic meaning and can be seen as a form of blessing and protection. It is believed that these stones can safeguard the peace and prosperity of a village, ward off evil, and bring good fortune. In traditional gardens, there is a technique for stacking stones to create artificial mountains, which serves as an abstract simulation of natural landscapes. The large stones stacked at the entrance of a village reveal the tension between man-made objects and nature.
The observation point is located at the threshold between the village and the cloud-filled valley, bridging these two scales. The design seeks to make the most of the elevation difference, preserving the original spatial imagery of the site. With a low-profile approach, the architecture is subtly integrated into the existing layout, respecting the continuity between the village and the valley. By "moving downward," people are encouraged to strengthen their connection with the valley.
The crevices in the stones can be seen as symbols of a microcosm, metaphorically reflecting humanity's small presence within this vast world. The platform at the village entrance is divided into three levels based on the elevation difference, connecting the village, the cloud-filled valley, and the tea gardens, each pointing toward different elements of the valley. Using narrow spaces as carriers, public activity spaces are sequentially embedded, moving from dynamic to tranquil, gradually drawing people's actions and perceptions into the valley. These “stone crevices” create a passageway system between the stacked stones, connecting the experiences across the three levels.
Stone musuem : First crevice of stacked stones
Each stone is a masterpiece of nature. Entering from the village entrance plaza, the Stone Museum serves as a historical exhibition hall, gathering stones that silently bear witness to the passage of time, preserving traces of history. Built on the original village plaza, the observation platform has a lower level carved out for the exhibition space, which serves as a gathering place for villagers, a venue for discussions, and an area for displays. By moving upward, one can gaze out over the valley and village; moving downward leads to the entrance of the exhibition hall, stepping into the first crevice between the stacked stones.
Valley terrace :Second crevice of stacked stones
Without disrupting the existing pathways used for production and transport, a second platform is formed on the valley side, becoming part of the natural landscape. As an extension of the village entrance plaza, this platform offers a scenic spot to view the mystical dance of clouds over the valley. Further down, within the second crevice between stacked stones, lies a tea room and ecological observation station, encompassing views of the tea fields and valley. The local, authentic tea aroma and vibrant green tea fields create a sense of tranquility and harmony. During tea breaks, visitors can observe the biodiversity and processes deep within the mountains, reflecting the infinite depth of existence.
Forest retreat :Third crevice of stacked stones
Descending step by step through a dark corridor, one moves deeper into the valley. The sounds of wind, bird calls, and flowing streams are essential elements of the valley’s character. Within a clearing embraced by the forest, these natural sounds become a background symphony, enhancing the immersive experience upon arrival. The forest's scent permeates every cell, while the interplay of light and shadow echoes the complexity of life, merging seamlessly with nature.
Every village is an essential vessel of local culture, embodying unique historical memories and the wisdom of rural life and production. Local considerations revive the everyday scenes and pastoral spirit of the villagers. The valley and Aotou Village exist in symbiosis—not only as a shared wealth for the villagers but also as an inseparable part of their spiritual life.
We are often overwhelmed by the vastness of the world and the complexities of life, neglecting the small yet precious things around us. Dwelling among the stones encourages a focus on subtle details, fostering a more humble and open approach to gaining a profound understanding of the world. The "stacked stones" form several narrow passageways in the valley, where people move through or pause, experiencing a shift in the scale of space and self, connecting earth to sky, and awakening a deep reflection on nature.
