Building further on the familiar site on Schützengartenstraße — that was the ambitious goal. Elsewhere, one might move out to a greenfield location. Not so in Lustenau: here, people cycle to the football match. A deliberate commitment to the site and to an urban stadium that grows out of its surroundings, breathes community, expresses identity, and lives sustainability.

In the Rhine Valley, on the border with Switzerland and directly adjacent to the Rhine, the desire for a new stadium built predominantly in wood — along with the preservation and integration of the existing west stand — shaped the programmatic and contextual parameters of the project. The task was to create a structure that would not become a landmark through overwhelming scale, which would heavily compromise its surroundings, but rather through four vertical floodlight pylons, each around 40 m tall, that define a space in the scale of the Rhine Valley.

The horizontal wooden stands preserve the human scale of the place and fulfil the people of Lustenau’s desire for a “living room” for their football — a place for their community, shaped in the scale of their town and built almost entirely of wood.

The heaviness of concrete and the lightness of timber construction, brought together by pushing their physical properties to the limit, merge into a unified whole and, through their contrast, create identity and a strong sense of address. A place that enables not only sport, but also community, urban quality, and a visible connection to the region.

Passing the ticket building, fans stream in from the north through the forecourt “Austria Village” — a lively agora for football. Together with a square planted with tall honey locust trees that provides space for social interaction before and after the match, Austria Village forms the threshold to the stadium itself. From here, staircases and circulation paths lead into the wooden interior of the stadium, which accommodates around 5,000 spectators. The pitch is tightly enclosed on three sides by the new stands, forming a closed oval together with the existing west stand.

The urban integration respects the existing neighbourhood, the established landscape, and the urban structure of the market town. A translucent outer skin reduces light emissions and protects the adjacent residential areas without sealing the stadium off from them. The façade’s permeability creates a quiet dialogue between the stadium and its surroundings.
